The Newburgh Ministry raised $722 for comforters and sheets for the 19 beds located in the shelter for men and women in need. Newburgh is not a tropical area. It is located in the mid Hudson River valley and during the winter the temperatures can drop to below zero, especially at night. Winterhaven at the Newburgh Ministry has provided shelter to those who could potentially die due to the bone-chilling temperatures.
As seen in this article from The Times Herald Record, "Darlene, 60, who is a well-known visitor at the warming center, said, “We try to tell everybody somebody is going to die out there (from the cold). My nose almost fell off today from frostbite, and I’m wearing two sweaters.”
Darlene said she has been homeless for four years, living previously in Connecticut and New York City before coming to Newburgh. After working for a time in education, she found herself without a job or a place to stay.“It can happen to anyone,” she said.
